When on board H.M.S."Beagle", as naturalist, i was much struck with certain facts in the distribution of the organic being inhabiting South America, and in the geological relations of the present to the past inhabitants of that continent. These facts, as will be seen in the latter chapters of this volume, seemed to throw some light on the origin of species - that mystery of mysteries, as it has been called by one of our greatest philosophers. On my return home, it occurred to me, in 1837, that something might perhaps be made out on this question by patiently accumulating and reflecting on all sorts of facts which could possibly have any bearing on it.
Quando mi trovavo a bordo della nave "Beagle" come naturalista, fui molto colpito da alcune oservazioni in merito alla distribuzione di organismi viventi che si trovavano nel Sud America, e alle relazioni geologiche tra gli abitanti attuali e quelli estinti in quel continente. Tali fatti, come si vedrà negli utlimi capitoli di questo libro, sembravano portare un poco di luce sull'origine delle specie, questo mistero dei misteri, come è stato chiamato da uno dei nostri maggiori filosofi. Al mio rientro a casa, nel 1837, mi venne l'idea che questo problema si sarebbe forse potuto risolvere in parte, raccogliendo pazientemente e studiando tutti i fatti che avessero rapporto con esso.
